Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpecker and young

This photograph was taken one day prior to the young leaving the nest.  In order to take this image, I hauled a 20 foot extension ladder into the woods, fully extending the ladder and put up a deer stand as high as I could reach.  I then stood on the deer stand and put up a second deer stand as high as I could reach.  This put me approximately 40 feet up in the tree.  I was eye level with the pileated woodpecker’s nest.  I spent several days watching the parents take care of their two young.  All 3 birds in the photo are males, as noted by the red mustache.  Female pileated woodpeckers have a black mustache.

We like to frame this image with the “Leather and Linen” frame.  It is also available in a smaller size (6″x18″) for $29.00. The smaller print looks better with just a “Leather” frame and no linen liner. With the frame it is $79.00
